RAF Akrotiri
Project Overview
RAF Akrotiri is home to the Cyprus Operations Support Unit providing joint support to British Forces Cyprus and operations in the region to protect the UK’s strategic interests.
The base was opened in 1955 to initially relieve the pressure on the main RAF station on the island, and has since grown into a forward thinking training unit. However, back in October 2015 the RAF base was subject to many reports when 114 refugees landed at the British Sovereign base; a critical front line station for the MOD and Royal Air Force.
It was stated to have insecure areas of the perimeter fence line. Due to these reports they were in urgent need of an improved military security fencing system to increase the level of protection.
CLD Fencing Systems was approached by the Cyprus Service Provider, the successful ISP contractors, who carried out the vast majority of maintenance/refurbishment of various British bases on the island. CLD Fencing Systems were brought in to design and manufacture a new Military Security Fencing Solution that would offer a high level of perimeter protection with defence against multi-threat attacks.
To withstand the harsh environmental conditions; from exposure to the sea and aviation fuel, CLD Fencing Systems’ Securus Rigid Mesh High Security Fencing was chosen to increase the security of their fence line. This Approved for Government Use solution was ideal for their perimeter security in order to offer this vital British Overseas base the increased level of protection they needed.
The Brief
In order to detect, deter and delay any potential threat, the client had a number of requirements to meet the increasing level of security for the base.
- Increase protection of assets and personnel with their security fence line.
- Approved for Government Use fencing system.
- Provide a robust solution to stand up against the rigours of daily life and exposure to harsh aviation fuels.
Systems Used
