Project Overview

When a new mental health unit planned to provide a safe and secure environment for their patients and staff, CLD Fencing Systems and a Littlewood Fencing were asked to design, manufacture and supply the perfect solution for this project.

Hafan Y Coed (Haven of Trees) Mental Health Unit at the University Hospital Llandough opened the doors of their £ 88 million facility back in 2016 offering patients a modern, therapeutic and recovery-focused unit.

Powell Dobson and Laing O’Rouke designed and constructed the detailed mental health unit, and in order to match the level of safety of the building, their hospital security fencing needed to encourage privacy and security throughout.

With these requirements, CLD Fencing Systems high security range was used, and Hafan Y Coed were able to secure their site with a welcoming rest place for patients.

Around 674m of CLD Fencing Systems Securus Anti-climb hospital security fencing and 18 Lockmaster Swing Gates were designed, manufactured and supplied to Hafan Y Coed. This hospital security fencing was ideal for the unit as Hafan Y Coed required ant-climb properties to provide staff and patients the safety they need. With this fence line they also required high security gate solutions with anti-cut and anti-ligature features with fully concealed hinges and locks to prevent climbing aids.

An additional requirement Hafan Y Coed requested was a fencing system that would provide them privacy for their outside garden. This was to create the relaxed, calming and welcoming feel they required for their recovery-focused facility.

The Brief

Security of patients and staff was paramount when understanding the brief for the new perimeter fence line and security access control. The following requirements were set out to maintain their security needs:

  • Create a safe and secure environment for staff and patients by implementing high security perimeter fencing.
  • Feature anti-climb, anti-cut and anti-ligature properties for both fencing and gate solutions.
  • Provide privacy screens for specific areas of the unit to promote recovery.
  • Manufacture 18 gate solutions for easy access for staff through the entire site.

Systems Used

Securus

Perfect for this project offering the client an anti-climb system thanks to its 2 x 12.5m close mesh apertures. Alongside this anti-climb feature, CLD’s Securus range offers a completely flush finish with anti-ligature properties to minimise potential injury.
Securus

LockMaster

Used throughout the unit, allowing safe passage for staff and patients. Securus 358 Security Mesh was applied for the infill to complement the flush finish contributing to the anti-ligature properties, minimising potential climbing aids.
