Edinburgh Airport Testing Centre

Project Overview

Back in April 2020, another COVID-19 testing centre was set to join the list of 26 other facilities across the UK.

The drive-through centre was to be opened up within Edinburgh Airport as part of the Government’s UK-wide drive to increase testing for NHS and key workers. This latest testing centre was going to be the third one built in Scotland and like the other facilities, it was imperative the centre was set up and operating within days.

The Edinburgh Airport testing centre was going to be operating similarly to the Aberdeen centre, working on an appointment basis schedule, testing key workers in order to increase the testing of healthcare workers and their families.

In order to help this new development, A-Plant (Sunbelt Rentals) contacted CLD Fencing Systems Rapid Response Physical Security Team (RRPST) due to our 24/7 response time. With more than double the requirement from the Aberdeen Testing Centre project, the RRPST had their work cut out to get this installed within the 24-hour window.

Over half a kilometre of FenceSafe Eclipse was picked and packed during the Bank Holiday Monday; and loaded on the very same day to be transported by WS Transportations. Whilst up in Edinburgh, ballast from Northern Scotland was being added to Dyce Carriers to arrive at the Edinburgh Airport site.

The Brief

A vital part to this project was the temporary fencing systems for the whole perimeter of the centre. The ability to offer these key workers the safety and security they needed whilst visiting the centre was one of the main requirements.

  • Create a safe and secure perimeter for the entire site
  • Offer a completely private testing centre using Privacy Scrim Netting
  • Guarantee a completely foundation free fencing system
  • Ensure chosen solution had wind loading calculations to prevent systems from collapsing

Systems Used

FenceSafe Eclipse

550m of this solution was selected for this testing centre as it provided the client with the level of security, they needed to protect their patients but without the permanent design.

“This is a national effort and we are proud to be working with a number of partners to turn this ambition into a reality and roll out additional capacity to where it is needed.”
