Brighton Velodrome

Project Overview
Preston Park in Brighton opened its doors back in 1877 after the arena was built by the British Army.
Nowadays, it’s the oldest working track Velodrome in the UK and around the world, standing at 580m, offering cyclists a unique racing experience.
This being said, back in 2015, Preston Park was forced to cease their cycling competitions due to safety concerns brought to light by British Cycling. Poor perimeter fencing and lack of maintenance to the track meant the velodrome would only be able to accommodate public cyclists for leisure. Due to their range of British Cycling Specified Velodrome Fencing, CLD Fencing Systems were approached to design and manufacture velodrome safety fencing, to welcome back competitive racing to the 142 year old track.
CLD Fencing Systems’ Sports Rail was selected as a bespoke velodrome safety fencing solution because of its British Cycling specification. With the renovations being predominantly funded by British Cycling, Preston Park’s competitive future was dependent on their needs being met.
At the end of the project, a total of 605 linear metres of CLD’s Velodrome Safety Fencing was successfully installed by Arbus Limited, alongside 6 access gates to complement the fence line for easy passageway.

The Brief
British Cycling and Brighton & Hove Council had a number of safety standards for the new velodrome safety fencing in order to open the track to competitive racing once again:
- Improve the safety of the track with appropriate perimeter fencing around the velodrome.
- Adhere to British Cycling Safety and International Competition standards.
- Incorporate sophisticated gate solutions for easy access in and out of the track.
