Walney Substation High Security Fencing

Joint Venture to protect Walney Substation Offshore Wind Farm with High Security Fencing and Gates

When energy giant Ørsted (formerly DONG Energy) announced the reclamation of 8 acres of marsh land near Heysham in Lancashire for their Walney Substation project, they knew that High Security Fencing and Gates would play a major part in the protection of the asset and estate.

The new substation forms part of the Walney Extension which has the ability to power over 590,000 UK homes from a total capacity of 660 mw. When the project is commissioned fully at the end of 2018 it will become the worlds largest offshore wind farm.

Lowther Forestry Group approached CLD Fencing Systems in 2017 to work on a Joint Venture to address the challenges of protecting this facility. The project required a complete high security fencing solution with physical access control that supported power (electric) fencing but could also be earthed due to the nature of the site.

Design work on the fencing and gate package started in 2017 with CLD Fencing Systems working in synergy with Lowther Forestry Group to create a bespoke package that would meet the various challenges of the project. Once sign off from the client was achieved work began to manufacture the bespoke fencing system and adapt it to hosting power fencing.

The high security fencing and gate aspect of the project, was completed in June 2018 at Walney Substation, with a glowing report from the client on the work carried out by Lowther Forestry Group. CLD Fencing Systems has previously worked on a number of projects with Lowther including the Mersey Gateway in Cheshire.

The final package consisted of the following systems:
